Dr S K Mandal, formerly Director (Scientific Services), Tata Steel, Jamshedpur, is a Management Consultant with over thirty years of industry experience with the Tata Group. He worked for over twenty years in quality management with Tata Engineering. He had all along been associated with the management and administration of quality at TELCO and Tata Steel. He has also been engaged in teaching at a number of reputed management schools in Kolkata, namely the Department of Business Management, JD Birla Institute, Institute of Management Technology-Ghaziabad, Kolkata Centre, the RCC Institute of Information Technology and as visiting faculty at IIT, Kharagpur. He has over seventy-five publications in reputed national and international journals and books; two of them won him the Gold Medals of the Institution of Engineers (India), and the Indian Institute of Metals. In recognition of his contribution to standardization efforts with BIS, he was elected Fellow of the Institution of Standards Engineers, in 1988. Total Quality Management is an outcome of his long-standing industry experience coupled with teaching the subject to students of management.
